It all started with a humble steel worker living in France – Xavier Pauchard. He began experimenting with steel galvanisation and having honed his skills began to make a variety of steel products for the home.

He patented the ‘Tolix’ brand in 1927 and set about making metal chairs and stools. Because they were cheap and easy to make, and relatively inexpensive to buy, Tolix furniture became a main stay in schools, hospitals, factories and other venues where large numbers of people needed to be sat.

Before long they could be spotted in all the bars and cafes in Paris and were actually given away by breweries in return for stocking their brand of beer.

Pauchard rose to fame in with his ‘A’ chair which was designed in 1937 and modified so that bar and cafe owners could stack them up high when they weren’t in use. This particular chair can be viewed today at the Pompidou Centre in Paris and at the MOMA in New York.

Tolix went out of favour after the 2^nd world war as people turned their attention to other styles of new and exciting chairs that were being brought to the market. The company later went into bankruptcy but was saved by Chantal Andriot in 2004 who turned its fortunes around and introduced exciting new colours into the range.
